What is a cost element category in SAP?

A cost element category is a critical function in the management accounting module that determines whether a posting can be done directly or indirectly. In direct posting, you post a pre-determined amount into a specific account number while in indirect posting, there is automatic account determination of the account to be posted into. Cost element categories classify primary and secondary cost elements.
